Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric forklifts is supplied by big industrial batteries that have to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety procedures must be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is very vital to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be located close to the charging place. The path to the station should not be blocked and an injured employee should be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never permit items such as matches or lighters to be used when someone is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging place well ventilated. The recharging process can release fumes. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
