History
In 1919, Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started. The company was founded by Anton Raky, an engineer and pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology. The initial company name was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
In the year 1937, the cornerstone for SMAG was laid when the manufacturing facility was acquired by the Salzgitter Group for making drilling machines. During 1986, the company purchased the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into a global brand name in the following years. Presently, SMAG is the world's market leader, utilizing grabs for worldwide cargo handling applications, agriculture and waste disposal.
