How Long Does a Forklift Battery Really Last?

To make certain that valuable units of electric forklift batteries would have long life, you must perform proper care and maintenance. These industrial grade batteries are big, heavy and expensive. If the battery is more efficient, the more effective your equipment operators can be. Extending the battery life span is truly a main concern, not just because of the cost of replacement, but also because of the expense of down time connected with battery issues.

Charging Cycles

Forklift batteries must be recharged only when they are at least 80% discharged. The rate of discharge varies depending on different factors like the number of hours the forklift is being utilized, the average weight of loads and the number of shifts being worked. For busy operations, nightly charging might be required. Nonetheless, don't forget that charging a battery very frequently would wear the battery more quickly.

Life Span

Usually, a brand new forklift battery would last at least 1,500 charge cycles. Therefore, if the battery is being charged on a daily basis, the battery would last roughly five years. Nevertheless, this is an average estimate. The battery life span could be extended significantly beyond the average 1,500 charge cycles with proper maintenance.

Deep Discharge

A forklift battery must never be allowed to become completely discharged. Not only can damage to the battery result from what is referred to as a "deep discharge", the forklift's electrical components and motor can sustain damage too. This is because the battery that is damaged could change the amount of power being supplied to the forklift. The ability of the battery charger to properly communicate with the battery can also be compromised. In a worst-case scenario, the compromised charger can not fully charge the forklift battery, resulting in a destructive cycle of incomplete charges. A service technician might be required to return the charger to proper working condition.
